A Bird a Plane a......

What's that I see in the sky?

Starting this week we will begin to  observe the sky and everything it contains. First thinking about the things that we can remember seeing in the sky and then venturing outside to observe (weather permitting). In years past this has been one of my students' favorite lessons. Probably because they get some extra time outside, who doesn't love that! Aside from getting to enjoy the great outdoors, my kiddos love this unit because they are able to think outside the proverbial box, they can create their own lessons, and the lesson spills over from science into computers, art, writing and even MATH!!!. For those that are not aware science and math are my very favorite subjects. We will be living and breathing the sky for the next 4 weeks.

Monday we will begin to think about things that we see in the sky and then venture outside to see if we can observe something more, again weather permitting.

Tuesday we will make pictures of the objects that we have observed and separate them into classifications that the students will decide on. This could look like animal, man made, weather or it could be drastically different; it will depend on the student.

Wednesday we will take our classifications and using the cooperative learning style of Round Robin will discuss and explain why each student classified their objects the way the did. This gives the students a chance to have their voice heard as well as practice their listening skills and being respectful of others.

Thursday and Friday we are out of school for Professional Days.

Each week I will update our progress for you to see, as well as give you the opportunity to do an activity at home with your student, this is optional of course. This week I thought it would be fun for you to read Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs with your child. Knowing that some may not have this book in their home library I have included a link to a reading of the book on Youtube.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Have fun with it! Talk about whether or not food could really fall from the sky. What other things could or could not be found in the sky?
